Paul K Feyerabend Foundation Award 2020 & earthquake preparedness

Mazin Qumsiyeh

Grateful to receive the Paul K Feyerabend Foundation Award 2020 (of course
any success is a team success & the honor is for Palestine. I donated the
money part of it to our Institute palestinenature.org):
Prof. Mazin B. Qumsiyeh– or Mazin, as many prefer to call him– is an
inventive, gentle, untiring ‘spinner of solidarity’ who well fits the
contemporary electronic modes of communication/ existence.  For years he
has tirelessly diffused throughout the world a regular flow of messages
that inform, inspire and motivate people to keep alive the hope and future
of Palestine — whose territory and people have been subject to 72 years of
flagrant injustice and humiliation …. Read more here:

We in Palestine are overdue but unprepared for a major earthquake. The last
earthquake of 6.2 on the Richter scale was in 1927 and killed hundreds and
resulted in large scale collapse for buildings in downtown areas of our
cities like Tabarya, Nablus, Safad, Jerusalem, Jericho, and Bethlehem. The
large one before it was in 1837 centered in Safed (the Galilee) causing
large scale damage and hundreds dead (The village of Jish had destruction
of every house in it). The two events of 1837 and 1927 were followed by the
man-made catastrophe of the Nakba of 1948-1950. We are overdue for another
earthquake, maybe even larger and we are not ready or even begun to
prepare. The situation today is now far more precarious especially because
of the poor construction in dozens of refugee camps in the region
(resulting from the ethnic cleansing/Nakba of 1948). The population in
Palestine is also more than 10 times what it was in 1927 so the death toll
will be in the thousands if not tens of thousands.

The Israeli regime prepared only by digging tunnels under the Al-Aqsa
mosque and Dome of the Rock and the nearby villages like Silwan with the
hope that collapsed structures (by an act of nature) would allow rebuilding
the purported third temple and completing the Judaicizing of Jerusalem.
There are also the man-made earthquakes like bombing besieged Gaza and
Yemen and destroying the US economy to build the great Israeli Empire
stretching from Washington DC to Socotra and the UAE. The people will
continue to suffer unless we take action. We in the Palestine Institute for
Biodiversity and Sustainability at Bethlehem University and the group
Palestine Action for the Planet urge governmental and non-governmental
organizations to survey and shore-up susceptible buildings and engage in
public education programs to help the people prepare for earthquakes
(natural or man made). To respond to Covid-19 and future natural or
man-made catastrophes, we need to have a new system that values people and
nature over profits.
