“Goodbye Julia” opens the 14th Malmö Arab Film Festival

Malmo Arab Film Festival (MAFF) has announced the selection of the film “Goodbye Julia” by Sudanese director Mohamed Kordofani as the opening film for the festival’s 14th edition, scheduled to take place from April 22nd to April 28th, 2024.

The film, written and directed by Mohamed Kordofani, is a co-production involving Sudanese, Swedish, German, Saudi, French, and Egyptian collaborators. It stars Eiman Yousif, Siran Riak, and Nazar Goma. The storyline unfolds in the period shortly before the secession of South Sudan, where a former singer from the North seeks to alleviate her guilt after causing the death of a man from the South, by appointing his wife as her maid. The film also participates in the competition of feature films at the festival.

“Goodbye Julia” made its world premiere last May at the Cannes International Film Festival, competing in the Un Certain Regard category. The film was awarded the Development Award at MAFF Industry Days 2021 and has received numerous accolades during its screenings worldwide.

Mohamed Kordofani, I am honoured and touched that the film is being screened at Malmo Arab Film Festival. Not only because it is an important festival for Arab filmmakers but also because MAFF was one of the first supporters the film when it was just an idea. We received a development grant from MAFF that really helped kickstart Goodbye Julia and we will always be grateful for that

Management and Artistic Consultant, Mouhamad Kablawi, “After witnessing the birth of the Sudanese film ‘Goodbye Julia’ during the MAFF Industry Days 2021, observing its reception of development grants, and witnessing its success with 25 awards from regional and international festivals, reaching its pinnacle with its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023, it is only fitting that the fourteenth edition of the Malmö Arab Film Festival opens with this exceptional film. With its captivating treatment and content, I am sure that the Malmö Arab Film Festival will truly appreciate this beautiful cinematic creation.”
