Retreating to ourselves – Mazin Qumsiyeh

Dear all

I am in Lebanon until Friday. I am attending the  Multi-stakeholder
Platform for Protecting Biodiversity: Inception Meeting organized by
Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) of the UN. The
event detail is here including working documents on sustainability (and I
believe you can join online)
https://www.unescwa.org/events/multi-stakeholder-platform-protecting-biodiversity

I will also speak tomorrow (Friday) at Shatila Refugee Camp. Next month I
travel to the US, in October to Italy, and in December to Qatar. and then
to Australia. These trips are exhausting physically on my aging body but  I
love these events because I learn so much from so many good positive people
and we develop collaborations that benefit our global environment, the work
for human rights, and the struggle for sustainable human and natural
communities. While I do not get to see the countryside and spend all my
time in meetings and conferences, I do get time to be with myself in
transites and dorms and hotel rooms. These times where we retreat with
ourselves to me are very important. They center us and make us more
cognizant and allow us to change our own behavior and attitudes. They are
times to reflect on lessons we learn from people we meet. Sometimes
unanticipated. Yesterday on the travel from Amman to Beirut, a woman who
met me many years ago recognized me and started a conversation. She was
traveling with her children and her parents and it was a lovely family with
smart outgoing children who loved to ask lots of questions.Amazing kids.
This morning I was a bit early at the UN conference and another person was
here whom I knew before: Asaad Serhal, executive director f the Society for
the Protection of Nature in Lebanon. Amazing person and we will collaborate
in advancing collective nature conservation. Now as I type this letter I am
surrounded by dozens of nature and human activists. I can’t wait to meet
them and then to have the time with myself to do more work. Working on
myself and working on a new proposal, several research publications and
hundreds of other activities for our institute (http://palestinenature.org).
I am grateful for all of you who write and work for sustainable human and
natural communities.
